Q tip painting

This is again something we did quite sometime back, but never got to the blog. Lazy mom!

1. You will need a construction paper, some q-tips, color paint (multiple colors)
2. Use one q-tip for each color, dip and paint.
Note: this concept of one q-tip for each color did not work out for a long time. May be with older kids but not with my little one.

A simple circle collage

This was not something I had planned. I did this with my son, just to keep him occupied. Well it worked:)

This was a craft I did more than a month back. I have not been posting regularly, but we did continue to do our little crafts.

1. You will need construction paper(multiple colors), glue, pen.

2. Draw a circle on to a construction paper. Of course, you could draw any shape or object. But this time, we just used a circle.

3. Spread out the glue. This is something I helped my son with. He was still not able to press the glue out.

4. Cut out small bits from the other papers you got.

5. Spread it out on the circle. Initially we did one by one, but once my son started getting restless, I just asked him to pour all the bits on to the glue and turn the paper upside down so that the outside the circle just falls out. He enjoyed that one better:)

Letter of the week - D

D is for dolphin

I am very bad at drawing and this is just a proof of that. Anyway, I did show my son pictures of dolphin on my laptop after that ;)

I dont have step by step pictures. My son is currently "camera crazy" and as soon as he sees the camera he just stops everything else and grabs it from me. As it is it is very difficult to make him sit in one place, even if it is for few minutes. So I did not want to hamper the flow by taking the camera out.

1. You will need construction paper, googly eyes, glue

2. Draw out the letter D on the black construction paper and cut out.

3. Paste it on to a blue paper.

4. Cut out the fins and tail from the scrap construction paper left out after cutting the D

5. Stick them on to the dolphin

6. Stick the eye.

I did most of the gluing for this one though my son did help and he did place the fins and tail and the eyes.

Okra Prints

Thelemon prints we did the other day were a hit. So I decided to do the same with okra. I have tried this before with him, probably when he was 18 months or so. He found it difficult to hold and press then. But this time, he could do it with very little help.

I dont remember much of my preschool days. But some images stay very clearly in my mind and one of them is me doing these okra prints. And today, I am glad that I did the same with my son:)

1. You will need: fresh okra, paint, construction paper

2. Cut the okra and take the portion with the stem on. This is required to hold and dip.If there are some seeds, take them out.

3. Pour some paint on to a pallette or paper plate.

4. Now, let them dip and press.

Hearty Butterfly

Right in time for valentines, hearty butterfly to spread love everywhere.

You will need: paper roll tubes, pipe cleaners, construction paper (we used red and pink), googly eyes, paint, glue.

1. Paint the tube red. I tried taking a picture, but everytime I took the camera, my son got so distracted and wanted to grab the camera. I thought I was better off with no picture than having to clean the paint from my camera. I wonder how other moms capture their lil ones at work. Painting the tube was in itself a task. We had to take a break. We continued the rest of the activity the next day.

2. Draw 2 hearts on the construction paper. (One on red and one on pink). I wish I had taken a smaller tube and limited our craft to just two wings instead of four.

This craft was bit too long for my son and we had do it in parts.

3. Cut out four hearts. (use two pink and two red construction papers)

4. Cut small square bits from the remaining construction paper. Keep it aside.

5. Put some glue on to the hearts.

6. If you wanted to make this messay like what my son thought, spread the glue with your hands:)

7.Pour the square bits on to the hearts.

8. Spread it out.

9. Keep working until you have covered the hearts completly. Add more if required.

10. Now, repeat the same with the other two wings. Now, this is when my son went to wash the glue off this hands, fell down and we had to take a break.

11. Let the wings dry. Paste them on to the tube.

12. Stick on the googly eyes

12. Add the pipe cleaners. I had to use tape to do this. Glue was not enough to hold it on.

13. The butterfly is all yours. Now play.

Baby danced the polka

Oh..my son loves the book. The book is about how a mom and dad try to put their baby to sleep, but the baby just refuses. In the end, they give up and start dancing along with the baby. The book reminded me of numerous days when kaju would not sleep and I have ended up doing what he wants to (and this includes playing bits of paper way past midnight)

Piglet and Papa - Margaret Wild

A very very cute book, perfect for a dad to read to the child. A little piglet is playing with its papa, and he bites papa's tail hard. Papa gets angry and the piglet is not sure if papa still loves the piglet. The piglet meets other farm animals who reassure that piglet's papa does still love him very much. In the end, piglet goes back to papa and realises that papa loves the piglet more than anything else.Such a cute story:)

Giraffe's cant dance - Giles Andreae

A lovely book with a great message. You have to read the book to appreciate it. The book is about a giraffe who wants to dance but cannot. All the other animals make fun of the giraffe. The giraffe is sad and heads back home. A little cricket helps giraffe find his own rhythm. In the end giraffe dances so well that all the other animals are stunned. Oh, and there is a little cricket in every page which my son loves to find out, just like he loves to find the little mouse in good night moon book

Mailbox

Emails have invaded our lives but we cannot do without mailboxes either can we? My son likes to check our mailbox to see if we have got any mails. It has now become more like a routine. Everyday as soon as his dad comes back from office, they both go and check mails.

This is a fun activity to do with kids. This can get very messy though. If you want to avoid the mess, just wrap it with paper and ask them to color it.

1. You will need the following: cereal box, paint, brush, marker

2. Cut out a rectangular box on the cereal box to put the letters

3. Start painting the cereal box (this got so messy, I had to give my son a bath)

4. Let it dry

4. Write "Mail box" on a piece of construction paper and glue it on.

5. Write an address and paste a stamp on the envelope

6. Start playing

2. Start out by drawing the letter C on the construction paper

3. Put the glue on

4. Place the cotton on to the glue

I had cotton roll, so it was bit of a exercise for my son to tear it into bits:)

Snow Man

We made this at our library during the preschool story time. We mixed white tempera paint and glue and the kids painted it on to wax paper. Glue the hat, eyes and nose. Once it dries, cut out your snowman.

Baby Einstein - What does Violet See - Raindrops and puddles

There are some books which you know your child would love, then there are these books that you really really wish your child would like just like u did, and then there are some books which you are not sure but still read it out to them. This belonged to the third category, but my son really enjoys this book. He loves pointing to the wiggly worm, big and small puddle. There have been lots of nights when he had asked me to read this book to him before going to bed.

When the rooster crowed - Paricia Lillie

This is a really funny book. The day has begun and the farmer has to wake up. Each animal in the barn wakes up and each time the farmer says "10 more minutes" "5 more minutes" and in the end when his wife and all the animals shout together, he gets out of the bed. It was just coincidental that I got this book when my sis was staying with us. If you try to wake her up from sleep she would always say"5 minutes and I will wake up". Every morning my son would go to her and say "wakey wakey" and she would say "sleepy sleepy, I will come in 5 minutes". My son found it so funny, he would come to me and say "amma, she is sleeping like the farmer".

The illustrations and neat and perfect for the toddlers to follow.

Dr. Seuss - Mr Brown can Moo Can You?

I like books which you can not just read to your children but can ask qustions and make the reading session interactive. This is one such book. The book is about different sounds we hear. My son loves the book, especially "dibble dibble dopp dopp"

Lemon Prints

Children love painting with different things. A dried lemon is just perfect for little hands. It is just the right size to hold and also makes beautiful prints. I had a lemon lying in my fridge and it had dried up. I am glad I did not throw it away and used it for this. My son loved this craft.

1. Gather your materials

You will need a dried up lemon cut in half (you dont want the juice coming out on the paper), construction paper, paint, a plate or bowl to pour the paint.

2. Dip the lemon on to the paint and print.

3. Ofcourse dear, you can try smelling...if you went any further, you would have landed with a red nose:)

B is for Bird

1. Gather your materials. You will need construction paper (two colors), glue, googly eyes, scissors

2. Draw the letter B on a construction paper and cut it out.

3. Glue it on to another construction paper. When the lil one is doing this, cut out the beak and legs.

4. Glue the beak, legs and the googly eyes. Voila...your bird is ready!

Letter of the week - A

A is for apple

1. Gather your materials

You will need construction paper (green and brown), red pom poms, brown crayon, glue.

2. Draw some green circles on the construction paper and cut them out. You could draw the tree as a whole, but I wanted my son to do some gluing work, plus we counted the circles as he placed them. It is totally up to you.

3. Draw the letter A on the brown construction paper and let your little one color it.

4. Cut out the letter A and glue it to another construction paper.

5. Place the green circles in the form of a tree on top of letter A. I put a drop of glue and asked my son to keep the circle on top of it.

6. Ask your kid to glue the pom poms.

7. Stick it on to your fridge or any place you like. Fridge works great for us because we have the leap from letters stuck on it and our own creations along with it, just seems perfect for learning.

A is for Ant

1. Gather your materials.

You will need a construction paper, crayons, black stamp pad, black pen

2. Draw out the letter A on a construction paper

3. Let your little one color it

4. Place your child's thumb on the ink pad and draw your ants. If they are old enough, they can do this by themselves. I did allow him to try it by himself (those are the ants you see at the bottom of the paper). But it is a bit too much for a two year old to stamp their thumb three times next to each other.

4. Draw the legs. (i did this step).

5. Hang it on the fridge and show it to dad when he comes back home. This is our favorite part.

My son has started to like lots more books and now he is able to site through 5-6 books at a stretch as well. Here are some of the books he enjoyed. My husband keeps asking, "do u get these books for him or are they for you?". I have to admit, I enjoyed lots of these books too.

Where Is Maisy?: A Lift-the-Flap Book - Louis Cousins

This is one book he can read by himself and it is a delight to see him read. The child lifts the flap on each page to find if Maisy is in there and in the end they find Maisy. My son just loves telling "oops! not here". This was the first Maisy book I got for him and after this I have got him few other Maisy books too and he has liked all of them thought this happens to be his favorite Maisy book till date.

I have a general crib against all lift the flap books and this one is no exception. I cant help worrying about the flaps when I give him the book.

Sea, Sand, Me - Patricia Hubbell

A simple book with lovely illustrations. The book describes a beach day wonderfully - A typical beach day where children build castle, play in the sand, eat cookies and lemonade, dance in the water, collect sea shells and have fun. We do a lot more fun things at Marina (it is the beach in chennai) like riding on a horse, going on a merry-go-round. But if you are looking for good beach books, I would definitely suggest this one.

Every time I read this book and he sees the page where the girl and boy are dancing in the water, he asks me why is the boy not wearing a shirt an

d I say it is because he is playing in the water and it will get all wet. And immediately h e asks, but the girl is wearing one!!! I guess some things they will just learn as they grow up rite?

My son is still afraid to go near the water in the beach and the "swine flu" scare has kept us away from the beach for few weeks now. He is really missing the weekend beach visits:(

I love Trucks - Philemon Sturges

I like books that have good illustrations and minimal text and this book belongs to that category. The book has big pictures of different kinds of trucks and a line describing what they do. My son is after the "red plus symbol" after he read the book. Where ever he sees it, he remembers the ambulance. I give a thumbs upto any book that my son asks to be read again and again. I give a thumbs up to any book that teaches my son something new. This book gets a thumbs up on both accounts. Go get the book!

Oh my Oh my Oh Dinosaurs - Sandra Boynton

This book is absolutely adorable and my son loves it. I got it from the library and we have been having it for a couple of weeks. He can complete most of the sentences by now. The rhymes are short and simple and kids are sure to love it. My son especially loves the plump and lean dinos:)

Good Night Moon - Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd

This is truly a classic and a must have. This is one of the first books I got for my son and he has loved it from day one. He has been having it for a long time and will still choose it from the pile of books if given a choice. A very calming bed time book, but yes you can read it any time of the day and the kids will definitely enjoy. A very good book to introduce new words as well.

Where is baby's belly button - Karen Katz

Bright colors, lovely illustration is what makes this book a hit. Great book to teach body parts. It is the lift the flap kind and I had given a similar 'Pooh' lift the flap book to my son and flap was in his hands in no time. So with this book I have been cautious and always monitoring. The flaps look sturdier than my 'Pooh' book and I am sure it will come out in no time if I allow my son to use it all by himself. It is a lovely book to spoil it in anyway.
Each page has a cute little baby and a question - "Where are baby's......?"
The child has to lift the flap and find the body part. My son loved this book.

It has been a loooooooooong time since my last post. This is to announce that I am still around. I made this for my son few weeks back. We practiced shapes. He hits the circle correctly always. Triangle some times. Thumbs down for square and rectangle.

Colors! Colors! Colors!

We are still working on colors. We started off with this. He is now able to say the words red,blue and green though he mixes them up most of the time. I thought it was time to do something different. So I prepared these color posters for him. I will be working on the primary colors only for now. But I just prepared the other posters for future use.

Later on I plan to cut out the individual pictures and laminate them and use it to play the 'match the colors' game. In each page, there is square card representing the color. Just lay down the color card and ask the child to match the pictures corresponding to the color. If you child is just starting to learn colors, it is better to start matching just couple of colors and not overwhelm the child with all the colors.

It is a bit early to try and play the 'match the colors' game with my son. So I will be using them as posters for now. Apart from learning colors, this can be used to teach new words as well. But before that, if you get to use this to play the 'match the colors' game, let me know how it goes. All the images have been downloaded from the web. If any of the images have any copyright notice, let me know, I will remove them. Please feel free to download the sheets and use them for your personal use.

Pretend Play - Enhance your child's imagination

Research shows that pretend plays a very important role in a child's development. Nobody can deny that pretend play helps to sharpen the creative side of the child. My son is 18 months and I encourage pretend play always.

My son, he just loves cooking. Early morning as soon as he gets up the first thing he asks for is a cooker. Even if he has one thousand toys, the joy he gets when he is playing with the kitchen utensils is something else. He pretends mixing things in a pan. He says amma, rice and then he gives it one nice mix. Then he says gas and pretends keeping it on a stove. He makes a whistle sound. I mean, he can spend an entire day just cooking. Then he pretends using the blender. He closes a pan with his hand and makes the blender sound. He then feeds everyone around including his teddy.

My husband gets worried sometimes seeing him with the kitchen set always. He asks me, is my boy not playing with cars? Not that he does not play with them, but he spends most of the time cooking:) I really don't think we have to worry about an eighteen month old boy playing with kitchen utensils. A girl child may play with cars and a boy might play with pans and spoons. At least until they are five years, it does not make a difference what a girl or boy plays with. The point is, we have to encourage pretend play for the benefit of the child.

My son of late has started mimicking the doc. He takes the ipod earphones and uses it as a stethoscope. Pretend play helps improve their observation skills. Young children are constantly looking around, observing the things and people and constantly learning. Pretend play is just an aid to improve their skills.

The GingerBread Man

Is there anyone who does not like the story of gingerbread man???

Compliment the story with the wonderful paper craft and lovely poem. I got this idea from the 'Young World Edition' of 'The Hindu'. They have a column contributed by Spark-India, Hyderabad. It showed how to make a moving doll. I have adapted the same to make a gingerbread man.

Easy Gingerbread Man Craft

Materials required:

Cardboard (I used a thick marriage invitation. It was brown and I din't have to paint it. Older children can paint the cardboard to have more fun)

Buttons, stickers,paint or anything you want to decorate the gingerbread man with
Scissors/blade

Step1

Draw an outline of gingerbread man on the cardboard.Draw a stand supporting the legs as shown below

Step2

Cut out the outline.

Step 3

Fold the stand such that gingerbread man can stand

Step 4

Cut out the 3 sides between the legs leaving the top side intact.

Step 5

Fold the cut out portion outside and make the gingerbread man stand

Step 6 Paint the gingerbread man. I used cotton buds to paint him.

Voila! gingerbread man is all set to run.

Every time, the gingerbread man ran away, I asked my little one to blow. I had to blow along with him because his Ooof Ooof was not enough to move the doll.He was thrilled to see his gingerbread man moving!!! Hip Hip Hooray!!

The gingerbread man did not last till the end of the story is a different matter all together. My son crumpled it very soon.

A cute circle time song. Substitute 'Sally' with child's name. For little children, keep them on your knee and move them in a circle. Lift them when you say boom
With older children, you can all move in a circle in the clockwise direction first and for the second child, move in anti-clockwise direction. Jump when you say boom.

Toy review - Fisher-Price 2-in-one playful puppy gym

I wanted to do a review every Monday. But somehow, last Monday i was not able to do that. Hopefully in future. Anyway, coming back to this wonderful toy, i give a thumbs up. We got this when my son was 3 months and he really enjoyed it. He used to lie there happily kicking, hitting and looking at the puppy nodding its head. Every time he hit the ball and it started singing he used give a big smile. Initially he did not realize that the song starts every time he hits. Once he realized he used to hit the toy intentionally. A very good toy to learn cause and effect. I used to allow him to play in the gym and finish off all my work in that time. He is 18 months now and I wish I could get a toy that would keep him engaged for hours like the puppy gym now:)

He liked the toy so much that when we moved back to India from US, I packed it with great difficulty and brought it back with us. He was four and half months then. After coming back I think I would have used it for two weeks at the max. He started kicking it so much that the arch used to shake too much and I was afraid it will topple on him. So I packed it up and kept it in his toy shelf. Now I have taken it back again. He uses it as a tunnel and plays with it. Though it is listed under birth to 24 months, I don't think children can use it for the whole period.

If I have to find any other drawback with this, it would be the monotonous songs. The little ones might not mind it. But since you have to keep listening to it again and again it becomes monotonous after a point for you. But on the whole, a great toy to keep the children engaged for a long time.

I had these shapes created using icecream sticks and I have stuck them on my wardrobe door. This way, it is easier for me to keep telling the names of shapes to my son often.

For older kids, you can ask them to create the shapes themselves using the sticks. Depending on their age, you can draw out complicated diagrams and ask them to form them using the sticks. Ask them to paint it to look more beautiful.

If you have little kids like mine, don't try to form these shapes along with them. All your shapes will be reduced to sticks in no time. They will hold them, crush them and pull out all the sticks before the glue dries up. But of course, they will have a lot of fun:)

OK...this it the game we played today..or should I say tried to play? I will try it again after a few months again. I took a sponge and used rubber bands for the ears and body. In India we get black/red sticker bindis. I used it for the eyes, nose and lips. The game is to take out the eyes and keep them in the right place. My son tried, he came somewhere close but the he did not know to take the sticker out of his hand and stick it out again. I think it was too small for him.
My son is 18 months. If you have kids older than mine you can try it out.
Older kids can even make the sponge doll by themselves and use satin ribbons for bows and decorate as they like.

My son adjusted the rubberband a bit, thatz why it is sort of higher on one side. I had to blackmail him with lots of things for him to let me take a pic. Anyway now that it is done, the kitty is now eyeless, noseless and lipless:)

Block Press

The next few months it is going to be shapes and colors for my lil one. We did block press today using pieces of building blocks we had. Just put paint over the edges of the blocks and press.

Learning Colors

I am trying to get my lil one learn colors. Ofcourse he has all those books that teach colors, but i think he needs to be a little older to learn colors from books. So I decided to stick these color cards in our room. Since he keeps seeing this often, it should be easier for him to remember them. Right now he is able to say dhed, boo, geen (red blue green). When I ask him to point to green, he gets it right most of the time. That is a big step i should say.

Initially I just had the cards, but i saw those lovely stick ons near Parthasarathy temple in triplicane and I just picked them up. It went very vell with color cards I had stuck.

If any of you have any other ideas to teach kids to learn colors, I am all ears:)

Monday Review - Leapfrog baby counting pal

Yes. I will definitely recommend this toy to anyone who is thinking of buying it. My son got this as a gift when he was 3 months and he is gonna be 18 months and is still using it. I usually have a set of toys out for him to play and a set of toys in his toy shelf. Once he gets bored of playing with the toys outside, I replace it with some of the toys from the shelf. This one has always been out. He really likes it a lot. The battery life is pretty good, we have not changed it even once till date. The music and songs are really catchy and nice. This toy can be used for a long time right from 3 months to toddlerhood when they start picking up numbers and colors. When my son was 3 months we used to hang it in his crib and slowly after a few months he started hitting and playing with it. The purple flowers are his favorite though.

Now to the cons, the buttons - they are definitely hard to press and my son still cant press it by himself. I initially thought they would loosen up after some time, but it has been more than a year and it is still hard.
For washing, you will have to wipe it with a cloth. There is no cover which you can remove, wash thoroughly and put it back on.

On the whole this is a great toy considering the length of use. Also a great toy for parents and kids to have fun together.
